THE FACE
The face on our home page is that of Allan Robertson which is displayed on his memorial in the Cathedral burial ground. Robertson is acknowledged as the first ever golf professional and was the finest player of his day. Born in 1815 into a local family who ran a golf-ball making business, which he joined, he soon became a caddie and golfer of renown. The R & A frequently sponsored him in prize matches, famously the challenge match against the Dunn’s of Musselburgh in 1849. He partnered Old Tom Morris in this match, winning the £400 purse. This was the biggest money match of the century, and it is worth noting that the prize money for the winner of the Open, half a century later, was a mere £50.00! From 1840 until the time of his death in 1859, Robertson never lost a money challenge, losing individual rounds, but not the full match. He frequently partnered Old Tom Morris who had joined his business as Robertson’s apprentice. In 1858 Robertson became the first person ever to break 80 (79 round the Old Course in 1858) but was to pass away the following year, aged 44. On his death, such was the esteem with which he was held, his memorial was erected by public subscription. On this obelisk, as well as the striking face, the inscription reads “he was greatly esteemed for his personal worth and for many years was distinguished as the champion golfer of Scotland” At this time there was no championship to determine the best player of the year, but shortly after Robertson’s passing, the Gentlemen of Prestwick decided to implement a championship – The Open. In Robertson’s day it was not required – he was The Champion.
